Why STL can't be dimensioned

STL stores triangles, not geometry. A Ø10.00 hole becomes a many-sided polygon — measuring it gives 9.96, 9.94, anything but the design intent. No serious drawing can be built on that.

STEP keeps the truth

A STEP file carries the exact B-rep solid: true cylinders, real radii, precise faces. Drawlytic measures dimensions on that geometry, so the drawing says Ø10 and means it.

The technical reason meshes fail

STL (and OBJ, 3MF) describe a surface as thousands of flat triangles — perfect for 3D printers, which only need to slice a shape, but destructive for engineering intent. The tessellation throws away feature information: there are no cylinders, no planes, no arcs left, only facets that approximate them within some export tolerance. A dimensioning engine reading a mesh can only measure the facets, so every value inherits the tessellation error, and features like counted hole groups (4ר8) can't even be detected reliably. That's why Drawlytic deliberately rejects mesh uploads rather than producing a drawing with wrong numbers on it.

STEP is the opposite: it's the exchange format for exact boundary-representation solids, the same mathematical description your CAD system works with internally. From a STEP file, Drawlytic's OpenCascade kernel projects front, top and right views with true hidden-line removal and measures hole diameters, radii, chamfer angles, overall dimensions and thicknesses directly on the geometry — matching your CAD to the hundredth of a millimetre.

What if I only have the STL?

First choice: get the source. STLs are almost always exported from a CAD model that still exists — the designer, the marketplace listing, or the customer can usually provide a STEP in minutes, and it's in their interest: every downstream step (quoting, machining, inspection) works better from it.

If the source is truly gone, mesh-to-BREP conversion is possible but lossy: FreeCAD (free) can convert a mesh to a shape and fit it into a solid (Part workbench → Create shape from mesh → Convert to solid), which works acceptably for simple prismatic parts and poorly for organic ones — dimensions will reflect the tessellated surface, not the original design intent. For anything that will be manufactured to tolerance, remodelling the part properly in CAD and exporting STEP is the honest path. Can I upload an STL to Drawlytic?

No — STL, OBJ and 3MF are rejected on purpose: a mesh can't produce accurate dimensions. Upload a STEP (.step/.stp) or a 2D DXF instead.

Tools that render an STL into a 2D image exist, but the dimensions on such output inherit the mesh's tessellation error. For a drawing someone will manufacture from, convert to a real solid (ideally the original CAD → STEP) first.
