Why export STEP instead of a mesh or a screenshot

Fusion 360 can export STL, OBJ and 3MF meshes for printing — but a mesh is only an approximation made of triangles, so nothing can be measured from it exactly, and Drawlytic rejects mesh files for drawing generation on purpose. STEP is different: it carries the exact boundary-representation solid, the same geometry Fusion 360 itself computes with. From that solid, Drawlytic's OpenCascade kernel projects the front, top and right views plus an isometric view with true hidden-line removal — solid visible edges, dashed hidden edges — and every dimension on the drawing is a measurement of the real model, in millimetres.

The automatic pass covers what shops read first: counted hole callouts like 4ר8, fillet radii, chamfer and taper angles, overall width/height/depth, thickness chains and center marks, with labels placed to avoid overlaps. The result is delivered as vector SVG, as framed PDF sheets in A4, A3, A2, A1 and Letter with a filled title block, as an orthographic projection DXF (VISIBLE/HIDDEN layers), and as a 1:1 top-view DXF on a CUT layer that goes straight into LightBurn or your CAM nesting software.

Multi-component designs and iteration

Export the whole design and Drawlytic splits it: every component becomes its own part (up to 30, largest first) with its own drawing package, and the complete model gets an assembly overview drawing. In the 3D preview you orient each part — the lay-face-flat tool snaps the face you click onto the table, which for laser parts means the cut profile projects exactly right — and rename parts so your names appear on the sheets.

Design changed? Export and upload again; generation is deterministic, so the same geometry always produces the same drawing. On any finished drawing, Measure & adjust is free and unlimited: dimension extra edges, measure point-to-point, add angles, drag labels, and re-render the PDF sheets at fit or true 1:1–1:8 scale. Cross sections (SECTION A-A, hatched at 45°) are free too.

How do I export STEP from Fusion 360?

File → Export → file type STEP (.stp/.step), or right-click any component in the browser tree and choose Export. Both the desktop app and the web version can do it, including on personal-use licenses.

Can I upload .f3d files directly?

No — .f3d is Fusion's proprietary archive. Export as STEP first; it preserves the exact solid geometry Drawlytic needs.

STL export was easier — why not use that?

STL is a triangle mesh: fine for 3D printing, useless for exact dimensions. A Ø10.00 hole in Fusion becomes a polygon in STL. STEP keeps the true cylinder, so the drawing can say Ø10 and mean it.

Do multi-component designs work?

Yes — each component gets its own dimensioned drawing package plus an assembly overview drawing, up to 30 parts per upload (25 MB). Exclude components you don't need before generating.

Can I get a DXF for my laser cutter from Fusion designs?

Yes — every part comes with a 1:1 top-view DXF on a dedicated CUT layer (only contours, no text or frames). Lay the part flat in the 3D preview first so the correct face is projected.
