How Drawlytic turns a STEP file into a drawing
A STEP file (.step or .stp, in AP203, AP214 or AP242 flavor) carries the exact boundary-representation solid your CAD system modelled — not a mesh approximation. Drawlytic loads that solid with the OpenCascade CAD kernel and projects the front, top and right orthographic views plus an isometric view using true hidden-line removal (HLR): visible edges come out as solid lines, edges hidden behind material come out dashed, exactly as engineering drawing conventions require. The output is vector line art, not a rendered screenshot.
Dimensioning happens on the same exact geometry. The engine detects circular features and groups identical holes into counted callouts like 4ר8, finds fillet radii (R) and chamfer or taper angles, measures overall width, height and depth, adds thickness chains and center marks, and places the labels so they don't overlap. Because every number is measured on the B-rep solid, the dimensions match what your CAD software reports — in millimetres.
Before anything is drawn you decide what 'front' means: every part opens in an interactive 3D preview where you rotate it, snap a chosen face flat, and name it. Orientation determines which features are dimensioned most clearly, so the guide rule is simple — put the most detailed face toward the front or top view.
Assemblies, cross sections and adjustments
Multi-body STEP assemblies are split automatically: each solid becomes its own part with a complete drawing package, largest part first, up to 30 parts per upload (25 MB max) — and the whole model gets an assembly overview drawing. Parts you don't need can be excluded in the preview before generating.
After generation, two things are free and unlimited on every drawing you own. Measure & adjust lets you click any edge for its dimension, measure point-to-point distances and angles, drag dimensions to better positions, pick a paper scale (fit, 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 or 1:8) and re-render the drawing and all PDF sheets. Cross sections cut the part along a line you draw and produce a proper SECTION A-A view with cut faces hatched at 45°, as its own SVG and PDF sheet.
Every project is saved to your account with its part names and files, so you can come back, re-download, or refine a drawing weeks later without re-uploading the model.

What file types are supported?
.step and .stp (STEP AP203/AP214), up to 25 MB. Multi-body assemblies are split into individual part drawings automatically.
How accurate are the dimensions?
Dimensions are measured on the exact B-rep geometry, not on a mesh — the same numbers your CAD system reports, in millimetres.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Everything runs in the browser; the heavy geometry work happens on our servers.
Which CAD programs can produce the STEP file?
Any mainstream CAD: SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, CATIA, NX, Creo, Onshape, FreeCAD and more all export STEP. In SolidWorks it's File → Save As → STEP AP214; in Fusion 360 it's File → Export → STEP.
Can I get a cross section view?
Yes — draw a section line on a finished drawing and Drawlytic generates a SECTION A-A view with cut faces hatched at 45°, delivered as SVG and as its own PDF sheet. Cross sections are free and never consume quota.
Can I add my own dimensions?
Yes — the free Measure & adjust mode lets you dimension any edge, measure between any two points, add angle dimensions, move labels, and re-render the drawing and PDFs as often as you like.
What paper sizes do the PDF sheets support?
A4, A3, A2, A1 and US Letter, landscape, each with a border frame and a filled title block (project, part name, date, units, scale, sheet size). Scale can be fit-to-page or true 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8.
