What a technical drawing generator has to get right

A technical drawing is a contract: the person machining, welding, laser-cutting or inspecting the part relies on every number printed on it. That sets a hard requirement for any tool that claims to generate one — the dimensions must come from the geometry itself. Drawlytic loads the exact boundary-representation solid from your STEP file into the OpenCascade CAD kernel (the same class of kernel that powers professional CAD systems) and computes each view by hidden-line removal: visible edges solid, hidden edges dashed, third-angle projection, millimetres throughout.

Dimensioning follows the same principle. Hole diameters are read from the model's cylindrical faces and grouped into counted callouts like 4ר8; fillet radii, chamfer angles, overall width/height/depth, thickness chains and center marks are all detected and measured on the B-rep — so the drawing agrees with your CAD system to the hundredth of a millimetre. Labels are placed with collision avoidance so callouts stay legible even on busy parts.

Generation is deterministic: the same model produces the same drawing every time. There is no prompt, no sampling, no 'roll again until it looks right' — which is exactly what you want from a document production will build against.

From 3D model to finished sheet

The workflow keeps the two decisions that need human judgment in your hands and automates everything else. First, orientation: every part opens in a 3D preview where you rotate it, snap the face that defines 'front' or lay the part flat, and name it — orientation decides which features are dimensioned most clearly. Second, refinement: after generation, the free Measure & adjust mode lets you dimension any edge, measure point-to-point distances and angles, drag labels, and pick a paper scale from fit-to-page to true 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 or 1:8.

Everything else is automatic. Assemblies split into up to 30 parts (largest first) plus an assembly overview drawing; each part gets vector SVG line art, PDF sheets in five paper sizes with a filled title block, an orthographic projection DXF with VISIBLE and HIDDEN layers, a 1:1 top-view DXF on a CUT layer for laser and CNC work, and an STL reference. Cross sections — a proper SECTION A-A with 45° hatching — are generated on demand and are always free.

Projects are saved to your account with their part names and files, so drawings can be re-downloaded, refined or sectioned weeks later without re-uploading the model.

Is Drawlytic an AI image generator?

No. Drawlytic is a deterministic CAD tool: it projects your actual 3D geometry with hidden-line removal and measures dimensions on the exact solid. AI image tools generate a picture that looks like a drawing; the dimensions in it are decoration. See our comparison page for a detailed breakdown.

What inputs does it accept?

3D: STEP files (.step/.stp, AP203/AP214/AP242) from any CAD system, up to 25 MB and 30 parts per upload. 2D: DXF files. DWG needs a one-click DXF export first; mesh formats (STL/OBJ/3MF) are rejected because they carry no exact geometry.

What outputs do I get?

Per part: multi-view SVG drawing, PDF sheets (A4, A3, A2, A1, Letter) with frame and title block, orthographic projection DXF (VISIBLE/HIDDEN layers), 1:1 top-view cut DXF, STL reference — plus assembly overview and optional cross-section sheets. All dimensions in millimetres.

How accurate are the dimensions?

They're measured on the B-rep geometry your CAD exported — the same numbers your CAD system reports. Nothing is estimated from pixels.

Can it do section views?

Yes — draw a section line and Drawlytic generates a SECTION A-A view with cut faces hatched at 45°, as SVG and its own PDF sheet. Cross sections are free and unlimited.

What does it cost?

Do I need to install anything?

Which standards do the drawings follow?

Third-angle projection, solid/dashed line conventions for visible/hidden edges, counted hole callouts (nר), section hatching at 45°, and framed sheets with title blocks — the conventions machine shops expect. Units are millimetres.
